Frutifresh launches new cylindrical pineapple packaging with 19.5% less plastic

The Frutifresh cylindrical pineapple has a new package. This new tub represents another step forward for Peris towards something that's very important to us: improving the packaging of our fresh-cut produce range. This allows us to reduce the amount of plastic used while simultaneously incorporating improvements in transparency, durability, brand recognition, and user experience. And the numbers, which in this case speak for themselves, tell the story: we've gone from a 28.7-gram container to one weighing 23.1 grams, a reduction of 5.6 grams of plastic per unit and approximately 19.5%. This improvement was achieved by working on both parts of the container. The body has decreased from 22.9 to 18.3 grams, a 20.1% reduction, while the lid has been lightened from 5.8 to 4.8 grams, a 17.2% decrease. Furthermore, the new container is made of polypropylene (PP), is recyclable, and incorporates 10% recycled material. But reducing plastic was only part of our goal.

Less material and packaging that works better.

When working with fresh-cut fruit, any packaging change must strike a balance between numerous requirements. We aim to reduce material usage, but this presents a challenge. The packaging must still adequately protect the fruit, meet food safety standards, withstand transport and handling, perform well on the shelf, and be convenient for the consumer. Therefore, in developing the new cylindrical pineapple package, we didn't simply focus on making it lighter. The new tub is more flexible and easier to handle. We've improved everyday aspects such as feel, handling, and opening. This increased flexibility also enhances certain aspects of the process: it's easier to heat-seal, withstands minor impacts better, and reduces the risk of breakage compared to more rigid packaging. This improvement benefits the consumer, but it begins much earlier. For our distribution clients, greater resistance during handling, transport, and shelf display can help reduce incidents and facilitate product management throughout its journey.

More Frutifresh, but also more pineapple

The change is also significant from a presentation standpoint. Until now, we used a plain, unmarked container for this product. The new design features a custom label with the Frutifresh logo, allowing us to reinforce brand identity, provide consumers with more information, and considerably improve product recognition on the shelf. But we were clear on one condition: communicating more couldn't mean hiding the fruit. In the fresh-cut produce category, product visibility is fundamental. Consumers want to see what they're buying, and we want to show it to them. We work with high-quality pineapples , and we have nothing to hide. On the contrary, we want it to be seen. That's why we opted for a particularly transparent container and a label design that allows us to incorporate information and brand presence without detracting from the product itself. Furthermore, incorporating this new image couldn't compromise another of the project's objectives: maintaining the overall recyclability, which is 100%. This is an important detail because customizing packaging shouldn't complicate its recycling. In our case, we wanted to achieve precisely the opposite: more information and stronger brand identity without sacrificing transparency or recyclability. This is probably one of the things that best summarizes what we were aiming for with this change: to improve the packaging without letting the packaging overshadow the contents.

Use the plastic we need more wisely

At Peris, we've been working for some time to reduce the environmental impact of our fresh-cut produce packaging . We've reduced the weight of the packaging, incorporated lighter tubs, and also advanced labeling solutions that decrease plastic use and facilitate the separation of materials. This is part of a continuous improvement process within an industry where packaging plays a vital role in food preservation, protection, and safety. Therefore, our approach isn't simply about using less plastic, but about using the plastic we need more efficiently. It's a series of small improvements to something as commonplace as a tub, which, multiplied by each unit we put on the market, takes on a whole new dimension. Less plastic, more functionality, and the same philosophy as always: that when you look at a Frutifresh tub, the first thing you see is the fruit.
